Trauma impacts individuals in many different ways and it can have a significant impact on an individual’s ability to navigate daily living. Completing my training with Niagara Health in the St. Catharines outpatient mental health department under the supervision of Sean Robb (Ph.D., RP) afforded me the opportunity to see how each individual will have unique symptoms as a result of their past traumatic experiences. Trauma can be sad, scared, withdrawn and low self-esteem, as well as angry, violent, in denial and an exaggerated sense of self. It can be a combination of all those symptoms or none of them. Trauma can trigger or exacerbate mental health disorders, such as personality disorders and mood disorders, or not. Trauma can be intensely experiencing many emotions or experiencing no emotions at all. Trauma can lead a person to seek out constant support from loved ones or completely reject any close relationships. Trauma can cause a person to be more susceptible to being a victim of domestic violence or be the perpetrator of domestic violence. Trauma can be constantly busy completing tasks or an inability to do any daily tasks. I will never claim to be an expert in trauma because every traumatic experience is different, I am constantly learning from clients. What I do know is that I entered this field to support individuals with trauma regardless of the symptoms, unconditionally and nonjudgmental.
I utilize an integrative approach to therapy that combines techniques from various psychotherapy modalities to meet the unique individual needs of clients. I am particularly interested in Psychodynamic Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, CBT, DBT, Mindfulness, and ACT.
